Office 2007 All Editions (Microsoft Direct Downloads)
Microsoft Office 2007 All Editions

Microsoft Office 2007 (officially called 2007 Microsoft Office system) is the most recent version of the Microsoft Office system, Microsoft's productivity suite for Windows. Formerly known as Office 12 in the initial stages of its beta cycle, it was released to volume license customers on November 30, 2006 and made available to retail customers on January 30, 2007. These are, respectively, the same dates Windows Vista was released to volume licensing and retail customers. Office 2007 contains a number of new features, the most notable of which is the entirely new graphical user interface called the Fluent User Interface (initially referred to as the Ribbon UI), replacing the menus and toolbars that have been the cornerstone of Office since its inception. Office 2007 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or higher, or Windows Vista.

Office 2007 also includes new applications and server-side tools. Chief among these is Groove, a collaboration and communication suite for smaller businesses, which was originally developed by Groove Networks before being acquired by Microsoft in 2005. Also included is Office SharePoint Server 2007, a major revision to the server platform for Office applications, which supports "Excel Services", a client-server architecture for supporting Excel workbooks that are shared in real time between multiple machines, and are also viewable and editable through a web page.

Microsoft FrontPage has been removed from the Office suite entirely. It has been replaced by Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, which is aimed towards development of SharePoint portals. Its designer-oriented counterpart Microsoft Expression Web is targeted for general web development. However, neither application is included in any of the Office suites. Also, since speech recognition and handwriting recognition are now part of Windows Vista, speech and ink components have been removed from Office 2007. Handwriting and speech recognition work with Office 2007 only on Windows Vista or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

Brief Note on Different Editions
Essentially, the different Office suites get bulkier (ie. more applications) and pricier in the following order - Basic, Home and Student, Small Business, Professional, Professional Plus, Enterprise and Ultimate. The last two (Enterprise and Ultimate) are at the very top echelon; however, rest of the components being same, Enterprise lacks Accounting Express while Ultimate is sans Communicator.

My one piece of advice to my fellow students (and those who need to make sense of a lot of information on a regular basis) is to either opt for Home and Student or Ultimate. OneNote, a notetaking and information gathering tool, is only included in the said packages and you'll miss out on the beauty otherwise. In a short span of a week it has completely replaced my paper notebooks and folders. Working on projects in OneNote is a breeze to say the least. It has found an ardent fan and enthusiast in me.

(Extract to get the mso.dll file)

4. Open any Office application and click on the activate by phone button.
5. In the Confirmation Code boxes fill in a string of zeroes (000000-000000-000000-000000-000000-000000-000000)
6. That's it. Enjoy!~

Now the important question of updates
EDIT - Phew, I've been busy downloading and experimenting (Me and my poor laptop haven't slept for two days now) and I'm pleased to inform that all Editions are able to pass the validation and get updates. However, Microsoft may come up with a workaround for this. Therefore, for those for whom updates is a question of life and death should give this a skip and get Wasim's Blue Suite.
Anyways, whatever edition you download, all updates will be made available to you through the SP1. Instead of downloading updates one by one the SP1 will give all in one package.

For those who are curious as to how it works - The mso.dll file tells Office what confirmation code to accept for any given product/installation id. Now some brilliant coder (not me, unfortunately Rolling Eyes ) made the line of code that tells office to unlock when the right confirmation code is entered available even when you enter a string of zeroes. I am learning Reverse Engineering and hope to be like the great guy.

Ok people, go ahead and have a blast. Report back any issues.

Office 2007 SP1 will also roll out and deliver via Windows Update, Microsoft Update and Automatic Update in the coming 3-6 months. The service pack for Office 2007 requires Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 to work.

Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) has been released for free download. Office 2007 SP1 intends to improve the stability, performance and security when using products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, FrontPage, OneNote, Outlook, Groove, InfoPath and Publisher) or suites of Office 2007 (Ultimate, Enterprise, Professional, Standard, Small Business, Home and Student, and Student). Other than latest updates and enhancements, the service pack also includes all of the updates released for the 2007 Office suite prior to December of 2007, normally delivered via Windows Update (with Microsoft Update opt in) or Automatic Update.

However, user reviews have not been entirely favorable. As this update cannot be uninstalled decide whether you really want it.

The SP1 updates the mso.dll file to a newer version. So we need to have a new reverse engineered mso.dll for SP1. Here's the new mso.dll for SP1

Installation method -
1. Install the download with a valid key
2. Install SP1
3. Replace the original mso.dll ( in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12)
4. Open any office application and activate by phone (enter a string of zeroes)
